Mariposa Grove first
The giant sequoias are 2 miles past the south entrance — a perfect first stop before the Valley.
Oakhurst is 20 minutes from the Yosemite south entrance (Wawona gate) on Highway 41, and approximately 55 minutes from Yosemite Valley. The drive up Highway 41 through the Sierra Nevada foothills is scenic and straightforward — one of the better California drives at dawn.
The south entrance on Highway 41 (also called the Wawona entrance) is the closest to Oakhurst — about 20 minutes north. From the south entrance, Yosemite Valley is another 30–35 minutes. This entrance also gives you immediate access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, which most northern-route visitors miss entirely.
Take Highway 41 north from Oakhurst. The road climbs through the Sierra Nevada foothills to the south entrance gate at 5,100 feet (about 20 minutes). Continue north through Wawona and the Wawona Tunnel to Yosemite Valley (another 30–35 minutes). Total drive: approximately 50 minutes. Tunnel View at the east end of the tunnel is one of the great vistas in North America — plan to stop.
Stop at Mariposa Grove first — it's right at the south entrance and contains 500 mature giant sequoias including the Grizzly Giant. Most visitors who enter from the north miss it entirely. After Mariposa Grove, continue north to Wawona for a quick stop, then through the Wawona Tunnel to Tunnel View.
Timed entry requirements vary by season and year. From late spring through early fall (typically May–September), timed entry reservations are often required to enter Yosemite Valley. Check nps.gov/yose before your trip. Guests staying in Oakhurst have an advantage: leaving before 7 AM often means entering before the timed entry window kicks in, or securing an early-morning slot.
Leave Oakhurst by 6:30 AM. This puts you at Tunnel View by 7:30 AM — before the parking lots fill and before the majority of day visitors arrive. Morning light on the Valley walls is also the best photographic light of the day. On peak summer days, parking in the Valley fills by 9–10 AM.
Parking in Yosemite Valley fills by 9–10 AM on peak days (June–August). Arriving before 8 AM from Oakhurst gives you the best chance of finding parking. Alternatively, park at the El Portal area and take the free Valley shuttle. YARTS buses also run from Oakhurst to the Valley — useful for avoiding the parking problem entirely on busy days.
As of 2025, the Yosemite entrance fee is $35 per vehicle (valid for 7 days). The America the Beautiful annual pass ($80) covers entrance to all national parks and pays for itself in 3 visits. If you're visiting multiple parks on this trip or plan to return, the annual pass is the better value.
Oakhurst sits at 2,200 feet — warmer than Yosemite Valley (3,900 feet) and significantly warmer than Tuolumne Meadows (8,600 feet). Summer days in Oakhurst are warm (85–95°F) with cool nights (55–65°F). Yosemite Valley is typically 5–10°F cooler. Winter brings occasional snow to Oakhurst and regular snow to the park — chains may be required on Highway 41.
May is the best single month — peak waterfalls, moderate crowds, comfortable temperatures. September–October is the best-kept secret: crowds drop sharply after Labor Day, temperatures moderate, and the light in October is extraordinary. January–February offers winter solitude and snow-dusted Valley walls with no crowds. Avoid July–August if you have flexibility.
Dogs are allowed in Yosemite but with significant restrictions — they cannot go on most trails, in wilderness areas, or in most park buildings. They are allowed on paved roads, in parking areas, and in some campgrounds. Green Gables Ranch is fully pet-friendly, and there are excellent dog-friendly trails near Oakhurst including Lewis Creek Trail and the Bass Lake shoreline.
Yes — and often better than staying inside the park. A vacation rental in Oakhurst gives families multiple bedrooms, a full kitchen, and outdoor space at a fraction of the cost of in-park lodging. Kids can decompress at the ranch between park days. The drive is 20 minutes to the entrance and 50 minutes to the Valley — manageable for any age.
Lewis Creek Trail (4.5 miles, moderate) is the best hike near Oakhurst — a creek-side trail through oak woodland with a waterfall. Nelder Grove (30 minutes from Oakhurst) has giant sequoias with almost no crowds. Bass Lake has flat, easy trails along the shoreline. All are good warm-up hikes before tackling Yosemite's more demanding terrain.
Excellent. Leaving Oakhurst at 6:00 AM puts you at Tunnel View for sunrise — the single most photographed view in the park, and dramatically better in morning light than midday. Valley reflections in the Merced River are best in early morning. Glacier Point at sunset (accessible via Glacier Point Road, open late spring–fall) is another standout. The south entrance route also passes through Wawona meadow, which is excellent for wildlife photography.
