Yosemite is one of the most popular group travel destinations in the United States — family reunions, friend groups, multi-generational trips, corporate retreats. But the park's lodging infrastructure was not designed for groups.
Here's the math: if you have 8 people and need 4 hotel rooms at Yosemite Valley Lodge, you're looking at $1,200–$2,000 per night. And that assumes you can get 4 rooms in the same property, which is rarely possible during peak season.
The alternative is obvious once you see it: rent a house.
Cost. A 4-bedroom vacation rental in Oakhurst for 8 people often costs $400–$600/night total — $50–$75 per person. Compare that to $150–$250 per person per night for hotel rooms inside the park.
A kitchen. Feeding 8 people at Yosemite restaurants for every meal is expensive and logistically difficult. A full kitchen means you can provision at the grocery store in Oakhurst and eat most meals at the house. This alone saves hundreds of dollars over a multi-day trip.
Shared space. A house gives the group somewhere to actually be together — a living room, a dining table, a porch. Hotel rooms don't have that. The social experience of a group trip is fundamentally different in a house.
Flexibility. In a house, you can leave at different times, come back at different times, and not worry about coordinating around hotel checkout times and restaurant reservations.
Enough bedrooms. For 6–8 people, you need 3–4 bedrooms minimum. Sofa beds and air mattresses are not a substitute for real beds on a week-long trip.
A full kitchen with adequate equipment. Check the listing for the specifics. A kitchen with one pot and a dull knife is not a full kitchen.
Outdoor space. After a day in a crowded national park, you want somewhere to sit outside. A porch, a yard, some acreage.
Proximity to the park. Every additional 30 minutes of driving is 30 minutes of logistics, especially with a large group. Oakhurst, at 20 minutes from the south entrance, is the right distance.
Green Gables Ranch sleeps up to 8 guests in 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The kitchen is large and fully equipped — guests consistently mention it in reviews as one of the highlights of the property. There's a dining table for the full group, a large living room, and 2.5 acres of outdoor space.
We've hosted family reunions, friend groups, multi-generational trips, and corporate retreats. The property is set up for groups in a way that most vacation rentals aren't.
