Yosemite Road Trip from San Francisco: The Southern Route Most People Miss

The Two Routes from San Francisco to Yosemite

From the Bay Area, most visitors take the northern route: I-580 east to I-205, then Highway 120 east through Manteca and Groveland to the Big Oak Flat entrance on the west side of the park. It's direct and well-traveled.

The alternative — and the one fewer people know — is the southern route: south on I-5 or Highway 99 to Fresno, then north on Highway 41 through Oakhurst to the south entrance.

The southern route is about 30–45 minutes longer from San Francisco. Here's why it's worth it for many travelers.

Why the Highway 41 Route Is Different

The approach is more dramatic. Highway 41 climbs from the Central Valley floor through the Sierra Nevada foothills — oak woodland, granite outcroppings, the Fresno River canyon. By the time you reach Oakhurst at 2,200 feet, you feel like you've arrived somewhere. The northern route through Groveland is fine, but the landscape is less striking.

The south entrance is less congested. The Big Oak Flat entrance on the west side of the park handles significant traffic from the Bay Area. The south entrance (Wawona) is generally less crowded, particularly in the morning.

Oakhurst is a better base than Groveland. If you're stopping overnight, Oakhurst has more services, better restaurants, and more accommodation options than Groveland. It's a real town.

Mariposa Grove is right there. The south entrance gives you immediate access to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias — 500 mature trees including the Grizzly Giant. It's one of the best things in the park and most northern-route visitors miss it entirely.

The Drive from San Francisco via Highway 41

San Francisco → Fresno (3–3.5 hours)

Take I-580 east to I-5 south, or Highway 99 south from Stockton. The Central Valley stretch is not scenic, but it's fast. Stop in Fresno if needed.

Fresno → Oakhurst (45 minutes)

Highway 41 north. The road climbs into the foothills. Oakhurst appears at 2,200 feet — the last town before the park.

Oakhurst → Yosemite South Entrance (20 minutes)

Continue north on Highway 41. The south entrance gate is at 5,100 feet. Yosemite Valley is 30–35 minutes from the gate.

The Case for Stopping in Oakhurst

For Bay Area visitors making a weekend trip, arriving at Yosemite Valley on a Friday afternoon is a frustrating experience. The Valley is crowded, parking is difficult, and you've just driven 4 hours.

The better approach: stop in Oakhurst Friday night. Arrive relaxed, have dinner, sleep well, and enter the park Saturday morning before 8 AM. You'll see Tunnel View in morning light with a fraction of the crowds.

On Sunday, you can take your time leaving — stop at Mariposa Grove on the way out, have lunch at Bass Lake, and be back in the Bay Area by early evening.

That's a better weekend than the standard approach.
