The Drive from Los Angeles to Yosemite

The most common route from Los Angeles to Yosemite is north on I-5 or Highway 99 through the Central Valley, then east on Highway 41 through Fresno and up into the Sierra Nevada foothills to Oakhurst, then continuing north to the park.

Total distance from downtown LA: approximately 310 miles. Drive time: 5–6 hours without traffic, 6–8 hours with LA or Fresno traffic.

The route via Highway 41 — the southern approach — is the most direct path to Yosemite Valley from Southern California. It's also, in our view, the most scenic approach to the park.

The Route in Detail

Los Angeles → Fresno (3–3.5 hours)

Take I-5 north or Highway 99 north through the Central Valley. This stretch is functional, not scenic. The Central Valley in summer is hot and flat. Stop in Fresno for gas and food if needed — there are good options on the north side of the city.

Fresno → Oakhurst (45 minutes)

Take Highway 41 north from Fresno. The road climbs gradually from the valley floor into the Sierra Nevada foothills. By the time you reach Oakhurst at 2,200 feet, the air is cooler, the oaks are everywhere, and the landscape has completely changed.

Oakhurst is 45 minutes from Fresno and 20 minutes from the Yosemite south entrance. It's the last real town before the park.

Oakhurst → Yosemite South Entrance (20 minutes)

Continue north on Highway 41. The road climbs through oak woodland and granite. The south entrance gate is at about 5,100 feet. From there, Yosemite Valley is another 30–35 minutes.

Why Oakhurst Is the Right Overnight Stop

If you're driving from LA, arriving at Yosemite Valley in the late afternoon — tired from 6 hours of driving — is not the ideal introduction to the park. The Valley is crowded, parking is difficult, and you're not in the right headspace to appreciate it.

The better move: stop in Oakhurst the night before. Arrive in the afternoon, settle in, have dinner at South Gate Brewing or Erna's Elderberry House, sleep well, and enter the park at 6:30 AM the next morning when the light is extraordinary and the parking lots are empty.

This is the approach experienced Yosemite visitors use. It's not a compromise — it's a better trip.

What to Do in Oakhurst Before Entering the Park

- Provision at the grocery store for the next few days (eating inside the park is expensive and limited)

- Walk Lewis Creek Trail for a preview of Sierra Nevada landscape

- Have dinner at South Gate Brewing Company — good beer, better-than-expected food, mountain views from the patio

- Set your alarm for 6 AM

The Drive Back to LA

On the return trip, consider stopping at Bass Lake (5 miles south of Oakhurst) for a swim or lunch at the Pines Resort. It's a good decompression stop before the long drive south.

Alternatively, take Highway 99 south through the Central Valley and stop in Fresno's Tower District for dinner — a walkable neighborhood with good restaurants that most LA visitors have never heard of.
