The Best Pet-Friendly Vacation Rental Near Yosemite (And Why Most Options Fall Short)

The Pet Problem at Yosemite

Yosemite National Park has strict rules about pets. Dogs are not allowed on most trails, in wilderness areas, or in any park facility. They're permitted on paved roads, in parking areas, and in developed campgrounds — but that's about it.

This creates a genuine problem for families traveling with dogs. You either leave the dog at home, board them somewhere, or find accommodation outside the park where the dog is actually welcome.

Option three is the right answer. Here's what to look for.

What "Pet-Friendly" Actually Means

Most vacation rentals that advertise as "pet-friendly" mean they'll tolerate a small dog in a crate with a $150 pet fee. That's not the same as a property that's genuinely set up for dogs.

A property that works for dogs has:

- Space to run. A small backyard isn't enough for an active dog after a day of being in a car. You want acreage.

- No fragile landscaping. Formal gardens and dogs don't mix. You want a property where a dog can be a dog without destroying something.

- Proximity to dog-friendly trails. Yosemite is largely off-limits, but the Sierra National Forest surrounding it is not. Dozens of trails in the forest welcome leashed dogs.

- A host who actually means it. Read the reviews. If no one mentions bringing a dog, the property probably isn't as welcoming as the listing suggests.

Green Gables Ranch and Dogs

Green Gables Ranch has 2.5 acres of oak woodland. There's room to run. The property isn't manicured in a way that makes a dog's presence stressful. We've hosted dogs of all sizes and the property handles it well.

Dog-friendly trails within 20 minutes include Lewis Creek Trail (leashed dogs welcome), the trails around Bass Lake, and numerous Forest Service roads in the Sierra National Forest. The Wawona area of Yosemite — near the south entrance — has limited dog-friendly options as well.

Practical Notes for Traveling with Dogs to Yosemite

Inside the park: Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. They're allowed in parking areas, on paved roads, and at picnic areas. They are not allowed on trails, in wilderness, or in any building.

Outside the park: The Sierra National Forest has no blanket pet restrictions. Most trails allow leashed dogs. Check individual trail listings on the Forest Service website for any exceptions.

At the ranch: Dogs are welcome. We ask that they not be left unattended in the house for extended periods. There are no breed restrictions.

The Honest Tradeoff

If your primary goal is hiking Yosemite's backcountry trails, your dog can't come with you. That's the park's rule, not ours, and it's not changing. The honest answer is that Yosemite is not a great destination for dogs.

What Oakhurst offers is a base where your dog is genuinely welcome, where there are real trails to hike together, and where the house is set up for a family — not just the humans in it.
