Oakhurst is not a food destination. It's a small Sierra Nevada foothill town with a population of about 3,000. The dining scene reflects that — there are no Michelin stars, no celebrity chefs, no trendy tasting menus.
What Oakhurst has is a handful of genuinely good restaurants, a few reliable standbys, and one exceptional option that would hold its own in any city. Here's the honest breakdown.
Erna's Elderberry House (Château du Sureau, Ahwahnee)
This is the outlier. Erna's Elderberry House is a European-style country inn restaurant about 10 minutes from Oakhurst in the small community of Ahwahnee. It has been operating since 1984 and has maintained a level of quality that's genuinely unusual for a rural California restaurant.
Prix fixe dinners, a serious wine list, formal service, and a setting that feels like it was transplanted from the French countryside. It's expensive — expect $150–$200 per person with wine. Reservations are required and should be made well in advance.
If you're celebrating something, this is the answer.
South Gate Brewing Company
The local brewery. The taproom is casual, the beer is solid (the Hazy IPA and the seasonal lagers are the best options), and the food is better than you'd expect from a brewery — good burgers, decent salads, and a kitchen that doesn't cut corners.
The patio has mountain views and is the right place to be on a warm afternoon after a day of hiking. Service is friendly and unhurried.
Oakhurst Grill
A diner-style restaurant on Highway 41 that does breakfast and lunch well. The pancakes are large. The eggs are cooked correctly. The coffee is refilled without asking. This is the right choice for a pre-Yosemite breakfast when you need to leave by 6:30 AM.
Pines Resort at Bass Lake
Not technically in Oakhurst, but 10 minutes away and worth including. Ducey's on the Lake is the upscale option (reservations recommended); the Pines Bar & Grill is the casual one. The bar deck over the water is the best outdoor dining setting in the area.
Raley's — The main grocery store in Oakhurst. Well-stocked, with a good deli and a decent wine section. Open until 10 PM. This is where to provision for cooking at the ranch.
Oakhurst Farmers Market — Saturday mornings, spring through fall, on Road 426. Local produce, honey, olive oil, and usually a tamale vendor. Small but worth the stop if you're there on a Saturday.
Without naming specific places, there are several chain restaurants and fast-food options on Highway 41 that are not worth your time given the alternatives. If you're going to eat in Oakhurst, eat at one of the places above.
Most Oakhurst restaurants are closed by 9 PM. If you're coming back from Yosemite late, plan accordingly — or plan to cook at the ranch. The kitchen at Green Gables Ranch is well-stocked and well-organized. Many guests find that cooking together is one of the best parts of the stay.
Green Gables Ranch has a full kitchen stocked with the basics. Raley's is 5 minutes away for anything else. The ranch is 40 minutes from Yosemite Valley.
