Yosemite receives about 4 million visitors per year. The Valley floor — which is where most of those visitors go — is roughly 7 miles long and 1 mile wide. The math creates real congestion from late spring through early fall.
Timing your visit correctly doesn't just improve the experience. It changes it fundamentally. Yosemite in May with waterfalls running full and moderate crowds is a different park than Yosemite in July with gridlocked parking and 90-degree heat.
Here's what each season actually looks like.
Winter is the least-visited time in Yosemite, and for visitors who don't need warm weather, it's arguably the best. No timed entry reservations required. Parking is available. The Valley is often dusted with snow, which transforms the granite walls and waterfalls into something otherworldly.
The tradeoffs: Glacier Point Road and Tioga Road are closed. Some facilities are limited. You'll need chains or a 4WD vehicle if there's been recent snow on Highway 41.
For guests staying in Oakhurst, winter is particularly good. The drive up Highway 41 in snow is manageable with the right vehicle, and the Valley in winter light is one of the great photographic experiences in North America.
Snow is melting, waterfalls are building, and the crowds haven't arrived yet. This is an underrated window. Yosemite Falls and Bridalveil Fall are running strong by late March. The Valley floor is green. Temperatures are mild — 50s and 60s during the day.
Timed entry reservations may or may not be required depending on the year. Check nps.gov/yose before your trip.
May is when Yosemite's waterfalls are at maximum flow. Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall — all running at full volume from snowmelt. The Valley is green. Temperatures are comfortable.
Crowds are building but not yet at summer levels. Timed entry reservations are typically required. Book early.
This is our personal recommendation for the best single month to visit Yosemite if you can only go once.
Waterfalls are still running in early June but tapering by late June. Tioga Road typically opens in late May or early June, opening access to Tuolumne Meadows and the high country. Temperatures in the Valley are climbing toward the 80s.
Crowds are significant. Timed entry required. Book accommodations and reservations well in advance.
The busiest months. The Valley is hot (80s–90s), crowded, and logistically challenging. Parking fills by 9 AM. Timed entry reservations are required and sell out quickly.
That said, July and August are when most families can travel, and Yosemite is still extraordinary even in peak season if you manage the timing correctly. The key is entering before 8 AM and having a plan.
From Oakhurst, a 6:30 AM departure puts you at Tunnel View before the crowds arrive. That hour makes a significant difference.
September and October are when experienced Yosemite visitors go. Crowds drop sharply after Labor Day. Temperatures moderate. The light in October — golden, angled, hitting the granite walls at a lower angle — is extraordinary.
Waterfalls are reduced or dry by September, but the Valley itself is beautiful. Timed entry requirements typically end in September.
October in Oakhurst is also exceptional. The oak woodland turns amber and gold. The drive on Highway 41 is one of the great fall drives in California.
Similar to January and February — quiet, cold, potentially snowy. The park is accessible but some facilities and roads are closed. A good time for visitors who want solitude and don't mind cold weather.
For most visitors, the best times to visit Yosemite are:
- May — peak waterfalls, moderate crowds, ideal weather
- September–October — post-summer quiet, beautiful light, no timed entry
- January–February — winter solitude, snow, no crowds (if you're prepared for cold)
Avoid July and August if you have flexibility. If you can't avoid them, stay in Oakhurst, enter before 8 AM, and have a plan.
