Hiking Near Oakhurst: The Overview

Oakhurst sits at the edge of the Sierra National Forest, one of the largest national forests in California. The trails within 45 minutes of town range from easy creek walks to serious backcountry routes. Most are uncrowded. None require the advance reservations that Yosemite demands.

Here are the eight best, ranked from easiest to most challenging.

1. Lewis Creek Trail (Easy — 2 to 8 miles)

The most accessible trail near Oakhurst. Lewis Creek Trail follows a year-round creek through a shaded canyon, passing the historic Sugar Pine Flume and several small waterfalls. The lower section (2 miles round trip) is easy and suitable for most fitness levels. The full trail extends to Corlieu Falls and beyond — 8 miles round trip for the ambitious.

Trailhead: Highway 41, about 10 miles north of Oakhurst. Look for the signed pullout on the right.

2. Fresno Dome (Easy to Moderate — 4.4 miles)

A relatively gentle climb to a granite dome with panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada. The dome itself is a broad, open expanse of granite — good for picnicking and photography. The views extend to the high country on clear days.

Trailhead: Beasore Road, about 25 miles northeast of Oakhurst. High-clearance vehicle recommended.

3. Nelder Grove Loop (Easy — 1.5 miles)

A short loop through one of the least-visited giant sequoia groves in California. The Bull Buck Tree — once considered the world's largest tree — is on this loop. The grove is quiet and the trees are extraordinary.

Trailhead: Nelder Grove Campground, about 10 miles northeast of Oakhurst on Sky Ranch Road.

4. Bass Lake Loop (Easy to Moderate — 8 miles)

A full loop around Bass Lake on the water's edge. The trail passes through pine forest, crosses several small streams, and offers consistent views of the lake. The full loop takes 3–4 hours at a moderate pace.

Trailhead: Multiple access points around the lake. The Forks Day Use Area is the most convenient.

5. Goat Mountain (Moderate — 6 miles)

A steady climb through chaparral and oak woodland to a summit with views of the San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra crest. The trail is less traveled than most in the area. The summit is a good place to be at sunrise.

Trailhead: Road 222, south of Bass Lake.

6. Wawona Meadow Loop (Easy — 3.5 miles)

Inside Yosemite, near the south entrance. A flat loop around a large meadow that was once a golf course. Good for birding, wildflowers in spring, and an easy morning walk before heading into the Valley.

Trailhead: Wawona Hotel parking area.

7. Chilnualna Falls (Moderate to Strenuous — 8.2 miles)

One of the best waterfall hikes in the Yosemite area, and far less crowded than the Mist Trail. The trail climbs steadily through forest to a series of cascades, culminating in the upper falls. Best in spring when the water is running full.

Trailhead: Chilnualna Falls Road, Wawona.

8. Buena Vista Peak (Moderate — 2 miles)

A short but rewarding climb to a granite summit with 360-degree views of the Yosemite high country. One of the easiest summit hikes in the area. The trailhead is on Glacier Point Road — check road conditions before going.

Trailhead: Glacier Point Road, about 7 miles from the Highway 41 junction.
